The Significance:
- Crippled Japanese naval strength. Also, there was a huge loss of trained mechanics and aircraft ground crews whom were necessary to the strength and organizational knowledge of Japan.
- Having lost four carriers, expansion of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific stopped and Japan stayed on the defensive for the rest of WWII.
- By 1945 after suffering more losses in other battles, Japan surrendered. The navy was no longer capable of conducting operations. This path was started by their defeat in Midway.
- Allowed the United States and its allies to move into an offensive position
- The island of Midway that the US gained from this war acted as a US air and naval base. With this they could launch attacks on Japan or other neighboring islands. This was important because no other long range bombers could get to Japan since they would run out of fuel in the process and have no place to refuel.
