Along with thousands of soldiers, here are some of the important people in the Battle of Midway
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was one of the highest ranking officers in his Navy.
He was the one who planned the Japanese attack on Midway, hoping to cripple the American Pacific fleet. He was the one who eventually called the retreat that ended the battle. Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo was another important factor in the Battle of Midway. He commanded the four carriers and ordered the planes to attack Midway. He was successful there, but he was also responsible for the disastrous loss of protection of his carriers that lead to their eventual demise.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz is considered to be one of the best Naval commanders ever. He was the U.S. Pacific fleet commander and Yamamoto's U.S. counterpart. It was largely due to his strategy, based off of intercepted radio communications, that the Americans won the battle.
The Nimitz class is named after him. John S. Thatch was an important Navy Pilot and tactician. His tactics such as the 'beam defense,' and the 'Thatch weave' were employed with great success in the Battle of Midway, and helped win the aerial portion of the battle. This was crucial to the sinking of the Japanese carriers. |
